Homemade Chicken and Dumplings Recipe
We’re mostly beef and pork lovers here at our house. But every now and then, I sneak in a chicken recipe that throws my family for a loop! In order for my husband to eat chicken, the meal has to be dang good. Well, let me tell you, this homemade chicken and dumplings recipe is so dang good. It’s made with simple ingredients, homemade dumplings and packed with flavor and goodness. It’s the perfect recipe for cold winter days and hungry bellies.

What Ingredients Are in Homemade Chicken and Dumplings?
- Shredded Chicken – I like to use a rotisserie chicken for my homemade chicken and dumpling recipe. It’s simple and makes this recipe even easier.
- Frozen Peas and Carrots – I’m a fan a making things easier! Nothing gets easier than grabbing a bag of frozen peas and carrots and tossing them in!
- Garlic Powder – Garlic powder to add in some warm flavor here.
- Onion Powder – I love using onion powder. It gives a nice subtle flavor without being too overpowering.
- Paprika – I’ve been on a paprika kick lately. I think it’s such an underrated spice! It has great flavor and brings an unexpected zing to recipes.
- Chicken Broth – This is the base of your soup.
- Salt
- Pepper
- Heavy Whipping Cream – I love a creamy soup and heavy whipping cream just adds so much richness and creaminess to this soup.
HOMEMADE DUMPLINGS
- All Purpose Flour
- Baking Powder – Baking powder makes the dumplings light and airy.
- Sugar – Sugar adds a subtle sweetness.
- Salt
- Butter – I use salted butter.
- Milk – I always use whole milk in my recipes.
Tools You’ll Need
- Large Stock Pot
- Measuring Cups & Spoons
- Liquid Measuring Cup
- Mixing Bowl
- Hand Mixer or Danish Dough Whisk
How to Make Homemade Chicken and Dumplings
- Remove all meat from the rotisserie chicken. Shred the chicken and set aside.
- In a large stock pot, add in chicken broth and seasonings. Cover and bring to a boil.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt and mix until well combined.
- Add in butter and mix until butter is well incorporated.
- Stir in milk and mix until dough is soft and sticky. Set aside and let sit for 5 minutes.
- When the broth begins to boil, add in shredded chicken.
- Using a cookie scoop or spoon, scoop 1-2 tablespoons of dough and drop into boiling broth. Repeat until all dumplings have been made.
- Cover and cook on medium high for 10 minutes. Do not remove lid during this time.
- After 10 minutes, remove lid and add in frozen vegetables. Softly stir into soup. Let cook an additional 2-3 minutes until vegetables are soft.
- Remove from heat and add in heavy whipping cream. Softly stir until well incorporated.
- Remove from heat and serve.

How to Store Homemade Chicken and Dumplings
If there are any leftovers, I will store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To reheat the soup, you can either pop it in the microwave or heat it on the stove.

- 4 (14.5 oz) cans chicken broth
- 4 cups rotisserie chicken, shredded
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
