Easy Tater Tot Casserole Recipe

At the beginning of the year, I thought I’d try my hand at tater tot casserole. I made one of the most beautiful tater tot casseroles only to have my kids tell me how gross it was. I was dying. So, I made it my mission to make a tater tot casserole that my picky eaters loved.

Over the past year, I have tweaked my recipe 8 times. Eight! But finally, I have created a recipe that everyone loves and raves about. This tater tot casserole is a classic dinner that is packed with cheesy goodness, crispy tater tots and mild flavors perfect for young taste buds. But it’s also yummy for adults as well!

What Ingredients Are in Tater Tot Casserole?

  • Ground Beef – As always, we use our own homegrown ground beef that is grass-finished and regeneratively raised. It’s delicious, lean and so good. Our ground beef is 90/10 and I never have to drain off a bunch of fat.
  • Extra Crispy Tater Tots – I like to use these Ore-Ida extra crispy tater tots. They have a great flavor and don’t go soggy in the casserole.
  • Condensed Cheddar Cheese Soup – This is the base of the casserole and it is the biggest change I made to make this casserole kid friendly.
  • Whole Milk
  • Medium Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • Crumbled Bacon – Bacon makes everything better. You can cook some bacon or just buy the real crumbled bacon pieces.

Recipe for Easy Tater Tot Casserole

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. In a frying pan, combine ground beef, seasonings and Worcestershire sauce. Cook ground beef until completely cooked through.
  3. While ground beef is cooking, in a bowl, mix together milk and cheddar cheese soup.
  4. Add soup to ground beef mixture and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
  5. Spoon ground beef mixture into the bottom of a 9×13″ baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle with 2 cups shredded cheese.
  7. Layer with tater tots evenly over top of beef and cheese mixture.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the tops of the casserole is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Remove from heat and sprinkle with remaining cheese and crumbled bacon.
  10. Serve and enjoy!

Storage and Reheating

Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, microwave or reheat the desired amount in the oven until warmed through.
