Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup Recipe
I love a cozy soup when it gets cold outside. And right now, it’s very cold outside. Being ranchers, we are outside in the elements every day. We’ve been feeding cows, horses, pigs, chickens – basically all the animals, and when we get inside on these cold winter days, we are cold! There is nothing I love better than to come inside to a warm, hearty bowl of soup! This slow cooker ham and potato soup recipe is one of my personal favorites as well as my kids.
This soup is the best because it’s a slow cooker recipe. Is there anything better than a slow cooker? I think not. Throw those ingredients in the slow cooker in the morning, go about your busy day and then come home to dinner ready and waiting. But also, this recipe is so yummy and is so cozy and comforting. You’re going to want seconds for sure.

What Ingredients Are in Ham and Potato Soup?
- Potatoes – For this recipe, I like to use russet potatoes. Can you use any potato you have on hand? Absolutely! Just go with what feels right.
- Diced Ham – I love to use leftover ham for this recipe! It’s a great way to utilize that leftover holiday ham that you have been eating for days. However, if you don’t have leftover ham, you can also use packaged diced ham or really any ham that you desire.
- Carrots – I am 100% that mom that likes to sneak in extra vegetables into my kid’s food without them noticing. This is one of those meals where I do just that. I added extra carrots because it makes this soup a little sweeter but also gets those veggies in!
- Minced Garlic – This soup is so flavorful! Adding minced garlic gives it a little warmth without being too overwhelming.
- Onion Powder – I also added some onion powder because it really adds some great flavor.
- Kosher Salt – I’m a big fan of kosher salt. I use it all the time. It has great flavor, and I can really fine tune how salty I want a recipe to be.
- Pepper
- Chicken Broth – I love to use chicken broth in soups.
- Parsley – Parsley is also a great herb to add to soups. Not only is it really flavorful, but it is also very aromatic which makes your kitchen smell heavenly!
- Whole Milk – Whole milk is so yummy! It has extra fat which means extra flavor. I always use whole milk in all of my recipes.
- Cream Cheese – Cream cheese makes this soup extra rich and creamy!
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese – If you have time, shred some cheese by hand. Pre-shredded cheese has a waxy substance on it to prevent it from caking while in the package. It makes it harder for it to melt in dishes. I always, always buy cheese in the bricks and manually shred it.
