Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe
Anytime that I make this recipe for homemade flour tortillas, my husband and kids eat half the plate of them before we even get to the meal. These flour tortillas are a little labor intensive but worth every minute of time spent. In fact, I think that I’ve ruined my family from ever being able to eat packaged tortillas again. Which I might regret one day when I’m pressed for time and have to use store bought tortillas again!

What is in Homemade Flour Tortillas?
- Flour – I use all-purpose flour for this recipe but I am sure any flour would do.
- Butter Flavored Shortening – To achieve the texture and softness that I like, I use butter flavored shortening. It mixes well and also still gives the tortillas a great flavor.
- Baking Powder – Baking powder gives these easy homemade flour tortillas a light texture.
- Salt – Salt adds flavor to the tortillas.
- Warm Water – Warm water is important because it will make it easier to knead the dough. If you use cold water, the dough is tougher and requires more kneading to get the dough to the texture you want.
Tools You’ll Need
- Electric Griddle -or- Frying pan (I prefer a griddle for these)

How to Make Homemade Flour Tortillas
- Preheat a griddle to 350 degrees F.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking powder.
- Next, add in the shortening. Using your hands, work the shortening into the flour mixture by flattening the small chunks of shortening between your thumb and forefingers. Continue doing this until all the shortening has been completely incorporated into the flour mixture. It will look crumbly in appearance when done.
- Slowly, 1 cup at a time, add warm water while kneading and working the water into the flour to make a dough. The dough should be slightly sticky so you might need to adjust the amount of water accordingly.
- On a floured surface, split the dough into small pieces about the size of your palm.
- Roll out the pieces of dough using a rolling pin until the tortillas reach the desired size. I usually try to make my tortillas about 12″.
- Transfer the uncooked tortillas to griddle. Cook each side for 1-2 minutes until the tortillas are cooked through and slightly browned. Be careful not to overcook or the tortillas will be crunchy and will not fold well.
- Repeat this process until all the dough has been cooked.
- Enjoy!
How to Make This Recipe Gluten Free
You can make this recipe gluten free by substituting the flour. Here are a few of my suggestions for the best gluten free flour.

- Bob’s Redmill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour
Storage
Once the tortillas have cooled, store in a Ziploc bag in the fridge. When you want to reheat them, the easiest way to do this is by popping them in the microwave for about 10 seconds. When I am using a large amount at once, I will lay them flat on a baking sheet and place them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 5-7 minutes until the tortillas are completely warmed through.
